Greater Old Town. 12 Visions

The heart of Tallinn is the Old Town – a space protected by walls, ramparts, laws and regulations. Along its edges, drifting sands have blown and the sea has raged throughout history. From time to time, invaders have arrived, forests have been cut down and suburbs burned. Today, this border is marked by the railway ring – a modern city wall, beyond which a raw and unpredictable landscape continues to grow.

Curator Villem Tomiste brings into focus 12 visions that have, over time, circled around the city walls. These are ideas intended to broaden the perceived borders and boundaries of Tallinn’s Old Town. In the future, this area my become significantly larger, involving parts of the city whose street network and building fabric are historic. The visions developed through Tomiste’s research are not final solutions, but signs of Tallinn’s spatial dynamics. The exhibition is an attempt to create a dialogue between different ways of relating to the city, with responses from 12 artists.
